Artist's Comments
The subjects in this painting were two very soft hearted people I met months ago in NYC. Neil, on the left, agreed I could photograph them for money. Dolores, on the right, asked "each?"
Their only possessions appeared to be the plastic bags, contents and cardboard sheets used as beds on the cold hard sidewalks. We talked about how they ended up on the streets and what their hopes and dreams were.
Dolores asked what I would do with the photos. I explained that I was going to do a painting of them. "A real painting?" she asked, followed by another genuine question as to what I would do with the painting, as she would really like to see it. I told her I would be having a big show in the city and that they were welcome to come to the opening as my personal guests.
Dolores then turned toward Neil who was further away and said "Hey Neil, did you hear that? Denis says we're invited to the opening for his painting show. We can go get some new clothes and I'll wear a pretty dress."
we are blessed with everything to live a decent life!
You continue to amaze me denis.
On the other hand, I always had the same question as her "do these paintings sell, and who would buy them?" Thses paintings are really awesome and very beautiful and have a lot of meanings. But usually a such realistic painting is very expensive and ritch people may prefere to buy a nature painting or a beautiful girl painting to place at their homes.
By the way, both look to be males to me? which one is dolores?
Very touching story.. I had a sad smile when i read how she reacted when you invited them to the show! Very simple and poor people. Thanks for giving them that joy.
Dolores is on the right side of the painting. Thank you for understanding the dynamics faced by two individuals on the other side of the world. One day, just perhaps, it will be different.
These paintings are too politically hot for the commercial galleries. But more and more public museums and universities are interested in showing it. At a certain point, once the galleries' clientèle are asking for the work due to having seen it elsewhere, the galleries will as a matter of course choose to represent it.
WOW !!!
this series is turing out to be phenominal, each painting you have done seems to get technically better than the previous, if thats possible !! I got to come over to NYC and see this series when you have the show, when is it ???
the textures in this are just something else ! the black plastic bags and the cardboard boxes are just such a realistic illusion.
i think you know how i feel about the content of this series very hard hitting and political, your really taking the whole genre of photo / hyper real art into a whole new direction that has never been explored.
this one is also added to my Favourites in the Denis Peterson appreciation society that can be found at simzzzz favourites deviant art ha ha!!
This brought tears to my eyes...the combination of the incredibley compelling, and beautifully delivered painting along with the touching account of how Dolores would like to come to the opening of the show....still has me rather choked.
I dont get angry as often as I should about the right things, but to see these people maintaining order and dignity, when they effectively have nothing, makes me really mad at the injustice of a society that allows this ( I mean ours, of course, not just yours).
It is certainly a testament to your humanity and giftedness as an artist that you can both make me angry and make me cry.
I thank you for making me a slightly better person by using your amazing ability in such a caring and moving way.
I am in no position to critique really....but having the plastic sack in the foreground, enforces the statement you are making here. The 2 subjects' direct gaze and their expressions are quite riveting, and the warm tones in the wall behind them seem to reflect the hope that they must maintain in order to be able to continue.
And their feet are indeed a masterpiece in their own right....but it is their faces that will remain with me, and I hope with everyone else who sees this.
Denis.....as well as capturing the image you also capture the background feelings.........I admire how you paint the focal point and the non focal points but also what you don't paint.........
As Simon says....when is the show....where is the show....I'll send some of my NYC ET friends to see it.

Re-cycled hippy....just happy that I'm old enough to have seen Hendrix, Clapton and Mayall live!!
multiple persons in an element ... that looks great man - I love that reflective sense of uncertenty in their eyes as to your claims ... it really has an aura in itself that surrounds them and speaks volumes - one of your best works - excellent *
