Deadliest Catch
Urethanes and acrylics 38 x 34

{I had been working on several paintings simultaneously the past four months. The difficulties are predictable regarding focus, concentration and exhaustion.

In anticipation of a show, I had ramped up my work schedule to 16-18 hour days, working seven days a week. This gave me the benefit of producing in a month paintings that would otherwise be produced in 3-4 months under normal working hours.}

This work is based on two main parts. The large figures are actually over 10 stories high, making the street level storefronts and passersby appear miniature and hyperreal, or in the reverse making the large figures appear as giants. In reality, they are merely silkscreened images on cloth draped around apartment windows above another one of my favorite stores in this series, Duane Reade.

I could not be as meticulous with the figures or their sea creatures as they were much too large and needed to appear in a softer depth of field. This accentuated the illusion of the sea creatures actually sitting above the store itself on its roof.

Well anyway, take a look and see if you like it.

Oh man, this is awesome! The more I look at the painting, the more three dimensional it appears. The sea creatures do actually look like they're heaped onto the store roof, and these intimidating giants are wading amongst them. They're almost crawling off the canvas! Once again the passers by are completely oblivious and don't seem to pay any mind to the danger they'd be in if that was all real :D

They're both so amazing...... but I think I like Whipping Post better.... I can't point on why, but the colors just do it for me.

Ahh, I love that show~ Amazing as always, the juxtaposition of the way you executed the form of the foreground and the ad looks really great. Stunning, as always.

What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.

The seafood looks giant. If I saw something like that, I'd probably be taken aback for a bit.

The perspective of the sign and building are done so well. A lot of times, with things pointing in and out like that, it tends to create an optical illusion with the perspectives switching randomly while you stare at it, but this does not do that. I am amazed! I want to keep looking at it!
