I took an emotional break from The Wall series; this is a small commissioned painting that I just completed today.

The actual piece is much more detailed as to facial pores, etc.

Your work really is inspiring. It's absolutely insane that you can render a subject to this degree of realism. I hope to reach this level. Maybe time is key with this sort of work. Speaking of which, how long does it take to finish a piece like this or the larger pieces you do?

Thanks for your time!

Hi Jess, thanks and I am glad to hear you are on your way to passing me by, hope I am around to see it. Time is indeed key, as is patience. No detail can be taken for granted, and every color together with its specific effect on perspective must be seen as integral to a successful balanced composition. I don't usually like to achieve this effect per se, but in this instance it was a close friend and at the time aspiring model. I deliberately chose to create a studio/photo appearance that glamorized her look, where in most other cases, I find myself working in other more diverse directions, editorially speaking. The larger pieces usually take about a month of hard work from start to finish.

Cheers and thanks!

I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my questions. I've seen your other work time and time again and it's quite amazing what you are able to render. If you do not mind a few more questions, out of curiosity, are you a self-taught artist? How old were you when you could produce work like this? and finally, are you an artist full-time? I guess what they call a working artist.

Yes and no, self taught as to airbrush and style, but went through BFA/MFA regimens while working as a commercial artist and learning all those board routines. I guess I was in my twenties when I could work similarly, but over time it improved based on a lot of trial and error with an emphasis on error. Yes, a full-time/working artist, although I don't recommend jumping in with both feet until/unless you know you how much work you can consistently turn out during the year and have garnered serious interest by reputable established galleries that can sell your work. Aside from total dedication and driving passion for your work, insufferable patience and never giving up are keys to success in this field.
